And above all you can admire the famous royal-palace (more than 600 rooms) of the Gonzaga, the Ducal Palace, with its wonderful frescos made by Mantegna, Giulio Romano, Pisanello, with Raffaello’s tapestries, Rubens’ paintings and many others.
But also the small courts of the province such as Sabbioneta, Castiglione delle Stiviere, Revere, they preserve great examples of the marvellous artistic inheritance of Mantua.
And the culture
The cultural tradition of Mantua has its roots in the centuries. Great names as Virgilio, Cornelio Nepote, Teofilo Folengo, Sordello from Goito, Baldassarre Castiglioni and then Arnoldo Mondadori, Umberto Bellintani, Giovanni Piubello and Alberto Cappi are some examples of the great ferments which gave life to the Mantuan culture. Tradition goes on with the “Festivaletteratura” (www.festivaletteratura.it) at the beginning of September with a multitude of readers and the most important and greatest writers and authors coming from every part of the world. They have the chance to meet each others and to talk in a dense calender of events. Thanks to this innovative formula and to the charming atmosphere you breathe in this town, the Festival has become a very successful appointment and it is an event not to be missed by its passionate readers.
