Discover the city

Throughout the period of the Italian Risorgimento, under Austrian rule, Mantua built new fortified structures and became part of the defensive system of the Quadrilatero, together with the fortresses of Peschiera, Verona and Legnago. The remains of the military structures from Lunette Fossamana, Frassino, and the Fort of Pietole, in the town of Virgilio, can be visited through a winding path around the city.

Between 1851 and 1855, a group of Mantuan patriots (the Martyrs of Belfiore) was executed for plotting against the Habsburg Empire. The city has dedicated a memorial and a monument to them. In the City Museum of Palazzo San Sebastiano, the weapons, clothes, personal items and documents of the protagonists of the Italian Risorgimento are preserved in the area dedicated to this phase of Italian history.

During this period, in 1822 the Teatro Sociale was opened and came to host such important guests as Garibaldi and Vittorio Emanuele II, honored with their plaques on the façade of the theatre.

Among the twentieth-century buildings, the eclectic works of Mantuan architect and sculptor Aldo Andreani stand out. In addition to many private homes such as the House of Tazio Nuvolari in via Chiassi, in 1914 Andreani worked on the building and decoration of Palace of the Chamber of Commerce and in 1944 completed the restoration of the municipal buildings in Piazza Erbe.
